Obtaining a Social Security Card

The I-765 Application for Employment Authorization application form includes a check box to request a Social Security Number, so no additional application is needed for an SSN card; it comes automatically once the I-765 is approved.

If a person cannot work and, therefore, will not receive a Social Security Number as part of their application for an Employment Authorization Document, they would apply through a different process. Remember, a Social Security Number is required to apply for Supplemental Security Income or SSI.
